God is Trustworthy Because He is Sovereign
The plan for the initial content of this blog, God willing, is for me to eventually put it into a book about trusting God. I have eight chapters outlined. So far I have written an introduction with some basic Christian doctrine. I’ve given some examples of what trusting God looks like and explained why we can’t trust God on our own power (we need the Holy Spirit to help us). That brings me to chapter three, where I want to spend a little time considering God’s trustworthiness and who he is.
How do I know I can place my trust in God? Whose wings do I depend on? There are three things I know to be true:
1. God is completely sovereign
2. God is infinite in wisdom
3. God is perfect in love.
And because these things are true, I know that God is trustworthy. Today I’ll write about the first one- God is completely sovereign. What does that mean? In it’s most simple terms, it means God is in control.
God is above all things and before all things. He is the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end. He is immortal, and He is present everywhere so that everyone can know Him (Revelation 21:6).
He’s in charge. He knows all things. He created all things. He is the ultimate source of all power, authority, and everything that exists. He’s the only one who can see the entire picture. That would be terrifying to me, if it weren’t for the other two facts, that he is infinite in wisdom, and perfect in love.
I think about how I would act if I were to meet someone really important, perhaps the President of the United States. Regardless of what I think about his policies or anything else, I would be respectful, humble, and honestly, very much in awe. He holds an office that will take a place in history. I don’t expect him to do anything for me personally. He’s got more important things to do. But if he did take the time to listen to me, I would be honored.
Now compare that to how we sometimes act towards God. I used the example of the president, because I couldn’t think of anyone else with more power off the top of my head. But really, it doesn’t even compare. God! An eight-year term of office that is very much limited in power, for one country, compared to the sovereign God of the universe, who has existed for all time and eternity. If I have respect for the first, how much more should I have for the second? My mind can’t even begin to fathom it. And to think, that I can come before him in prayer, which is just another word for talking with him, and he loves me? It’s too incredible for words. He doesn’t owe me or anyone else anything. But consider Revelation 21:6 again,
He is present everywhere so that everyone can know Him.
It’s really quite amazing. I think about the immensity and beauty of his creation, and then I consider words such as Matthew 10:29-31,
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.
This is the stuff I like to think about. When I do, I know that God is trustworthy. It puts things into perspective.
